4130 Alloy round steel

4130 Alloy Steel (UNS G41300) is a low alloy steel that contains molybdenum and chromium as strengthening agents.  This steel exhibits excellent mechanical properties such as toughness, machinability, good strength, and weldability.

This steel grade is a versatile alloy with a reasonable strength that’s up to 600°F (315°C) as well as better atmospheric corrosion resistance.  As one of AISI steels, it can respond well to mechanical and heat treatments compared to carbon steels.  With its low carbon content, this alloy steel can be easily welded.  It exhibits excellent overall combinations of toughness, strength, and fatigue strength.

4130 alloy steel is considered stronger and harder compared to other standard steel grades.  The alloy becomes suitable enough for machining as long as it has been heat-treated right after forging.  Optimum strengths, conditions, and temperatures should be primarily defined to heat treat the material part.

Machining this alloy steel can be easy through the use of conventional methods.  But when steel’s hardness increases, machining can be quite difficult.  Forming the alloy is done in its annealed condition.

Since this alloy is readily machinable, machining simple shapes might follow a normalizing treatment, but machining complex shapes will need annealing.  A coarse pearlitic structure with minimum ferrite is recommended for optimum machinability.

This low-alloy steel is often used in many applications as forgings in aerospace construction and oil and gas industries, agricultural and defense, and in automotive.
